Phone scams are a growing criminal trend nationwide, with Florida ranking the highest in complaints. Palm Beach Gardens Police Department has received over 16 reports of phone scams this year. One of the largest scammer groups identified by law enforcement agencies are the Jamaican scammers, with the elderly being its largest target groups.
Scammers will use several different tactics to convince people that whatever the scenario is, that it is real and needs their immediate attention. The scenario usually requires money to be sent to them by way of credit card or gift card. Victims have been scammed with threats ranging from arrest by the IRS, winning a prize but needing to pay processing fees, fixing a virus on your computer, or being a family member in need of money for bail or some other emergency.
Law enforcements agencies are working tiresomely to combat this trend. In the meantime, they offer some simple tips that can help you from becoming a victim of a scammer. They suggest that you never wire money to anyone you do not know. Never use gift cards for payment over the phone. Keep your credit card, checking account, or Social Security numbers to yourself.
